From CFO to Strategic Business Partner
Je
The CFO role has changed.
Financial control remains fundamental. Reporting must be accurate. Governance must be strong. Cash and risk still matter.
But in many organisations, that is now only the foundation.
The modern CFO increasingly sits at the centre of strategic decision-making.
Complexity changes the brief
Consider what happens when a company internationalises.
Suddenly the finance leader may need to navigate different entities, tax environments, reporting structures, investment decisions and funding needs.
Add acquisitions and the role broadens again.
Add digital transformation, sustainability reporting or a private equity shareholder and the CFO becomes a critical interface between financial information and strategic choice.
That requires more than technical finance expertise.
Strategic does not mean less operational
There is an interesting paradox in CFO recruitment.
Companies often say they want a “strategic CFO”.
What they sometimes mean is somebody who will operate at a higher altitude and leave detail to the finance team.
That can be risky.
The strongest CFOs often combine both dimensions.
They can discuss long-term capital allocation with the Board in the morning and challenge the assumptions behind an operational forecast in the afternoon.
They understand the numbers deeply enough to move beyond them.
EQ matters in finance too
Another underestimated capability is emotional intelligence.
A Group CFO working across multiple entities rarely controls every stakeholder directly.
Influence becomes essential.
The CFO needs credibility with the CEO and Board, but also with divisional leaders, finance teams and external partners.
They may need to challenge investment proposals, introduce more discipline or change established processes without losing organisational support.
That is leadership.
In one of our Executive Search mandates for a newly created Group CFO position in an internationally growing environment, this combination became central to the profile: financial depth, international capability, entrepreneurship, pragmatism and the emotional intelligence to operate transversally.
The lesson applies far beyond finance.
As organisations become more complex, functional excellence and leadership capability increasingly need to coexist.
